Who are the dreamers?
Who are the dreamers in Hollow Knight? The Dreamers are three powerful beings who sacrificed themselves to create magical seals that contain the Radiance, the primary antagonist threatening Hallownest with the Infection.
The Three Dreamers
Lurien the Watcher
Lurien serves as the guardian of the City of Tears from his towering spire. Known as "the Watcher," he observes Hallownest from above and was deeply loyal to the Pale King's plan. His butler Quirrel protects his chambers, though Quirrel loses his memory after Lurien enters his eternal slumber.
Monomon the Teacher
Located in the Teacher's Archives in Fog Canyon, Monomon was Hallownest's greatest scholar and educator. She studied the kingdom's mysteries and trained many students, including Quirrel, who served as her assistant before becoming Lurien's protector. Her archive contains vast knowledge about Hallownest's history and inhabitants.
Herrah the Beast
The queen of Deepnest, Herrah rules over the spider-folk in the kingdom's darkest depths. She made a deal with the Pale King to become a Dreamer in exchange for having an heir - Hornet, who becomes a crucial character in the Knight's journey. Her sacrifice ensured the continuation of her bloodline while serving the greater good.
Their Purpose and Sacrifice
The Dreamers' seals work in conjunction with the Hollow Knight, who contains the Radiance within the Black Egg Temple. This containment system was the Pale King's desperate attempt to save Hallownest from the spreading Infection that turns bugs into mindless husks.
To progress in Hollow Knight, players must use the Dream Nail to break each Dreamer's seal, though doing so ultimately weakens the containment of the Radiance. Understanding the Dreamers' sacrifice reveals the tragic nature of Hallownest's downfall and the complex moral choices underlying the game's narrative.
