What happened in the Abyss?

What happened in the Abyss is one of Hollow Knight's most tragic and pivotal story elements, revealing the dark origins of the game's protagonist and the lengths the Pale King went to save Hallownest.

The Pale King's Desperate Plan

Faced with the spreading infection of the Radiance, the Pale King devised a horrific solution in the depths below his kingdom. The Abyss became the site of countless experiments where the King, together with the White Lady, created vessels from Void and their own essence. These vessels were intended to contain the Radiance and stop the infection's spread.

The Birth of Countless Vessels

Thousands of eggs were cast into the Void-filled Abyss, where they hatched into small, mask-wearing beings. Most of these vessels were deemed imperfect and left to perish in the darkness. The Abyss floor became littered with their broken shells and discarded masks, creating a haunting graveyard of failed attempts.

The Hollow Knight's Selection

From this mass of vessels, the Pale King selected one that appeared to be truly "hollow" – empty of mind, will, and voice. This chosen vessel became the Hollow Knight, sealed away with the Radiance in the Temple of the Black Egg. However, the plan ultimately failed because the Hollow Knight developed feelings and thoughts, particularly an attachment to the Pale King.

The Knight's Origins

The player character, known as the Knight, is revealed to be another vessel that escaped the Abyss before the sealing. Unlike its sibling, the Knight may possess the true emptiness needed to contain the Radiance permanently.

The Abyss represents both the kingdom's darkest hour and its potential salvation, where countless lives were sacrificed in pursuit of a hollow savior. Understanding these tragic events provides crucial context for the Knight's ultimate confrontation with both the infection and its own dark origins.
