The Abyss became the site of countless experiments where the King, together with the White Lady, created vessels from Void and their own essence. These vessels were intended to contain the Radiance and stop the infection's spread.

The Birth of Countless Vessels

Thousands of eggs were cast into the Void-filled Abyss, where they hatched into small, mask-wearing beings. Most of these vessels were deemed imperfect and left to perish in the darkness. The Abyss floor became littered with their broken shells and discarded masks, creating a haunting graveyard of failed attempts.

The Hollow Knight's Selection

From this mass of vessels, the Pale King selected one that appeared to be truly "hollow" – empty of mind, will, and voice.
