How to beat False Knight?

Learning how to beat False Knight, the first major boss in Hollow Knight, requires understanding its attack patterns and exploiting key weaknesses.

Understanding False Knight's Attacks

The False Knight has three primary attack patterns. Its ground slam creates damaging shockwaves that spread across the arena floor. The boss also charges horizontally across the platform, dealing contact damage. Finally, it throws rocks that fall from above in predictable patterns.

Positioning and Movement Strategy

Stay mobile throughout the fight by jumping frequently to avoid ground-based attacks. When False Knight raises its mace for a slam, position yourself away from the impact zone. The shockwaves don't reach the elevated platforms on either side of the arena, making these safe spots during slam attacks.

For the charging attack, simply jump over the boss as it moves across the screen. The rock-throwing phase requires watching the shadows on the ground to predict where debris will land.

Dealing Damage Effectively

Target the Armor Weak Points

Attack False Knight's armor by striking its body repeatedly. After dealing enough damage, the armor will crack and eventually break, stunning the boss temporarily.

The Maggot Phase

When the armor breaks, a small orange maggot (the true False Knight) becomes exposed. This is your opportunity to deal significant damage. Strike the maggot multiple times before it rebuilds its armor shell.

Essential Tips for Success

Bring plenty of Soul for healing, as this fight can be lengthy for new players. The Vengeful Spirit spell can help damage the armor from a safe distance. Focus on patience rather than aggressive tactics – wait for safe openings to attack.

After three armor-breaking cycles, False Knight will be defeated, rewarding you with Geo and opening the path forward. Mastering this boss fight will prepare you for the more challenging encounters awaiting deeper in Hallownest's forgotten kingdom.
