Do you have to beat all bosses in one go?

Do you have to beat all bosses in one go in Hollow Knight? The answer is no - Hollow Knight features a checkpoint and save system that allows you to tackle bosses at your own pace without needing to defeat them all in a single session.

How Boss Progression Works

Hollow Knight automatically saves your progress after defeating each boss, meaning you can safely quit the game and return later without losing any victories. When you defeat a boss like Hornet, False Knight, or any of the other challenging enemies, that progress is permanently recorded in your save file.

Respawning and Retry System

When you die during a boss fight, you'll respawn at the nearest bench (save point) and can immediately attempt the fight again. You don't need to restart from the beginning of the game or lose progress on previously defeated bosses. However, you will need to retrieve your Shade to reclaim your Geo (currency) and regain your full Soul meter.

Optional vs. Required Bosses

Hollow Knight contains both mandatory bosses required for story progression and optional bosses that provide additional rewards, lore, or alternate endings. You can choose to skip certain optional bosses like the Radiance or Nightmare King Grimm and return to them later when you're better equipped or more skilled.

Boss Rush Modes

While the main game doesn't require beating all bosses consecutively, Hollow Knight does feature specific boss rush challenges in the Godhome DLC content. These pantheons do require defeating multiple bosses in sequence without saving, but they're entirely optional endgame content.

The flexible save system makes Hollow Knight accessible to players of all skill levels, allowing you to practice difficult encounters repeatedly. Ready to dive deeper into specific boss strategies or learn about the most challenging optional encounters?
